Just after 22:20 a call was recieved about a truck that lost control on the R21 at the R25 offramp. At 22:39 the call for backup was made for a technical rescue team to assist in extricating the two entrapped persons.
All possible rescue attempts were made to free the driver but were unfortunately unsuccessful. A trauma surgeon from Netcare Milpark hospital was activated to assist on scene. After 4 hours of failed rescue attempts the very hard decision was made to do an emergency amputation of the patients lower limbs.
After a grueling 5 and a half hours the patient was finally freed from the wreckage and airlifted to a specialist trauma hospital.
All of us at VEMRU applaud the professional efforts from all parties on scene and saw once again that we have world class emergency workers keeping our roads safe.
EMPD was on scene to investigate the accident.
